Character Name: Daan
Character Canon: Fear and Hunger
Canon Point: Festival of Termina, Day 2 Morning
Age: 28

Crime: Abuse of corpse. (Did you really think you could save her?)

Background: Here and here (not skipped; pickpocket).

Personality: Daan is a troubled soul. He is a world-weary young man, one who has seen the cruelty of the world both on the frontlines and in the back alleys of the city; one who has done what he can to help those in need, but ultimately feels his contribution is insignificant. As a doctor, his clientele has ranged from the rich to the poor, and he feels pity for each of them equally. Pity, yes, but not quite contempt - despite all his cynicism, he is not a callous man. When presented with the opportunity to do another harm, he will try to find another way - but make no mistake, this does not mean he will take violence lying down. (He'll never draw first blood - unless it's his own.)

His parents were members of the Sylvian religion - one characterized by the use of love and sex as methods of healing, often at the price of sanity - and were neglectful in their care of him. One day, they lost what remained of their minds and never returned from a meeting. This left him not only with a strong sense of independence, as he had to fend for himself from a young age, but a mistrust of religion , particularly Sylvian. Though not quite erotophobic, he does have a complicated relationship with sex itself as well. He does not blanch at its mention in ordinary contexts, but grows uneasy and will be quick to dismiss the conversation if he feels it is associated with Sylvian in any way. In some ways though, his relationship with it and Sylvian herself could be described as a sort of resignation - for no matter how much he tries, both seem to worm their way into his life. (Can he truly reject that which allows him to save lives?)

He is also protective of children, or perhaps more accurately, their innocence. To those younger than him, he tries to be reassuring and preserve their mental well-being, especially in dangerous or stressful situations. He also shows contempt towards those who would do them harm, and is mistrustful of institutions involved in their care - also due to his own experiences. However, this can also manifest as him being overly infantilizing of those who are younger than him, such as refusing to serve alcohol to an 18 year old, even in the midst of a life-threatening situation. (He's terrified of being part of the cycle, even as his nightmares tell him that it's his fate to be.)

He dislikes relying on others unilaterally, but isn’t opposed to teaming up when it’s for mutual benefit.

Despite all this, he’s not unfriendly. He welcomes conversation, and will even joke around in the right situation. Before his wife’s death, he was quite social, and enjoyed mingling with his father-in-law’s acquaintances and colleagues. Even now, some part of that remains, and if he can be allowed to forget the tragedy of his life for a while, it may shine through. (It's easier to look on the bright side when you have both of your eyes.)

In contrast to his rough childhood, he’s grown to have a taste for the finer things in life, likely due to his father-in-law’s influence. He’s skilled in mixology, enjoying both making and drinking various liquors, and may use this as an opportunity to reach out to and bond with others. He’s also a smoker, and has a habit of smoking particularly when he’s trying to think. (Those will kill you, you know, faster than anything you're trying to run from.)

Despite being well-educated, he’s not much of a reader, and prefers learning through hands-on experience. Even though he’s found success as a doctor, he doesn’t particularly enjoy it, considering it a lot of work. The failure to save his wife still haunts him, and perhaps he believes that failure disqualifies him from being a doctor. He does not shy away from his duty, though. Medicine is the act of equivalent exchange. “The price to save others is to trade your very life and self” - this is the most fundamental thing Daan ever learned, from the very man who would one day force him to pay that price. (This was his final lesson - if your own flesh isn't enough, offer up your blood as well.)

This is a man who has seen his world crumble. This is a man who gave a piece of his very self to try to bring it back. This is a man who failed, and now seeks a reason to keep going. It was finding the reason behind his wife’s death - but what will it be now?
